Lock Down Loneliness

May 28, 2020 by Dr. Sigrun Hackl

We are spending more time at home. Seeing less of our friends. Reducing our social activities. We have to. For all of us it is a burden, for those of us in a single household, it can become quite lonely.

So more and more are thinking about company, and the idea comes up of a furry friend, a four legged companion to take away that emptiness. And they do.

Pets fulfil your life in ways that only pet owners will understand. Yet, is this a good time to adopt? Dogs usually live for more than 10 years, cats can live up to 20. While you are currently spending plenty of time at home, and would have plenty of time for your furry friend, what about the ‘day after’?

Lock down is not going to last forever, this whole thing will, eventually, pass. And then what? Once we return to our more social lifestyle with friends and family, going out and socialising, working in the office instead of from home, what then? How much time will you have for the four legged companion that was helping you through the tough times? How much of your attention will THEY get, when YOU no longer depend on it? Pets are for life, not just for quarantine. The current times will only cover a fraction of their life expectancy, yet your commitment should be, MUST be, for (their) life.

So before you rush into the relationship with a fluffy friend, please think it through! Do you really want to commit for 10 to 20 years? Are you able to provide for the pet, all through its life? Physically? And financially?

Pets need more than the food. They need attention and love and care. They need exercise and activity. They need, sadly, sometimes, medical care. They can fall sick, they can have accidents, and financial burdens can accumulate quickly. Are you ready for all this? Committed to care for a life (in its lifetime)? Is your situation financially stable enough to provide for medical care as well? Is your living situation stable enough to continue providing beyond the lock down?

Pets are a wonderful addition to any household, be it family, couple, shared or single. They enrich your life and give you unconditional love and company. However, before you commit, be committed. Be sure that you are able to return the favour with equal dedication. Be sure that you are ready. And if you are, go and adopt! Make another life richer, more fulfilled and happier, they deserve it as much as you do!
